Mammals - Coggle Diagram
Mammals
Marine Mammal Adaptations:
Deep diving
use oxygen more efficiently
Anaerobic respiration occurs while they hold their breath
can tolerate atmospheric pressure due to collapsable lungs and ribs
conserving water by not drinking much
water is conserved from food they eat
Ecolocation
used to locate oncoming predators or prey with sound detection
Examples:
whales
dolphins
4 different types of teeth
premolars
molars
incisors
canines
thick fur: helps them keep warm in cold weather
*sea otter has the thickest fur of any mammal
some may have hair instead of fur; to help maintain body temp
camouflage
protective coloration allows them to blend in with their surroundings
all have a 4-chambered heart
lungs are used to take in oxygen
monotremes
oldest mammalian lineage
lay eggs
marsupials
pouched
placenta in mammals:
allows maternal and embryonic bloodstreams to transfer materials without mixing
May live in many different biomes
*Coyotes are the most adaptive mammal in the world
vertebrates
mothers feed their young with milk from mammary glands
*mammals are the only mammals that sweat; but not all do
lower jaw is a single bone
middle ear has 3 parts
primates
