Population Genetics
Why use statistics for reporting DNA?
Provide jury with a method of understanding evidence
DNA can't be termed 'unique'
Provide an idea of how often a profile might be found in a population
Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium
HWE: If a population remains constant then allele frequencies & genotype frequencies will remain fixed
p2 + 2pq + q2 = 1
Based on ideal population
Random mating
Non migration
No mutation
Large population
No natural selection
Random union of gametes
Match Probability Calculation
Probability of two random, unrelated indiv in general population having an identical DNA profile
Work out genotype frequency of each locus first
Multiply all loci together to give change of seeing this DNA profile within the population
Correction Factors
Added to statistical calculation to allow for possibility of chance matches
