'some ladies' Rossetti - Coggle Diagram
'some ladies' Rossetti
applicable CONTEXT
written in 1848, Rossetti 18
written in a game of bouts-rimes, supposedly in 7 minutes
this means that, while the persona in the poem may be exaggerated for comedic purpose, it is unlikely rossetti would have been able to craft a persona with entirely differing views in this time frame (i.e this is likely influenced by rosettis own opinion on vanity)
FORM POINTS
-
ABBA, ABBA rhyme scheme for the first octave
-
-
first 8 lines, present tense, sestet is conditional (excluding last line which is imperative)
final line- 'poke' is the stressed part of the iambic foot, emphasises this final message of ridding the world.
function of the volta- rather than a shift in attitude, in this case the speakers attitude remains the same, but becomes stronger after the volta. from just judgemental to something more sadistic.
intention in developing the same message after the volta may be to highlight that there is no instance where vanity is excusable.
LANGUAGE points
first octave
anaphora of 'some'- shows distance between the speaker and victims of their judgment-- sense of entitlement. emphasises the number of people being judged.
modes of transport- all for upper class- (especially 'painted clarence') speaker thinks such blatant displays of wealth are innapropriate
focus on the class divide, prominent in victorian society
idea that people are focusing on materialism instead of religion, the speaker (most likely rossett, devout christian), dissaproves of this, believes loyalty to god should be more prominent.
alongiside verb 'patronise' , she criticises the class divide.
-
last sestet
-
explaining how she'd be 'rather enjoying' watching 'certain old ladies dressed in girlish pink' drown
-
contrast between 'old' and 'girlish' highlights disdain for those who dress younger than they should
-
final line 'go to the bason, poke them o'er the rim. --'
a blunt way of clarifying Rossettis overall message that those who are vain and self centred should essentially die
this is solidified by her use of the em dash, which could reflect a life curtailed
STRUCTURING AN ESSAY
one para on octave, one on sestet.
what is the poem ABOUT
disdain, contempt, judgement, casting judgement on those who she deems superficial, overly ostentatious, boasful displays of wealth and grandeur.
