Class Discussion
On Tuesday we were visited by a nurse and comic creator which they utilize as a method of informing the public on serious issues concerning health and wealth and wellness.
We were able to discuss the ways that comic panels and zines are helpful to capture the attention of people who might not want to or have the means to read up to date information from scholarly articles.
I think that it was so interesting to be able to talk to the guest speaker and it was also important to talk about who comic strips don't reach and what their purpose is specifically. We spoke about how important it is to make sure that the information is being distributed to the correct audience and how humor is implemented and used as a tool in communicating effectivley.
We were handed magazine titled "Health and Wealth" which analyzes the history of the hospital system in America as well as how it works with paying for medical help and who has access to that level of care.
We then looked at a specific 4 panel comic that depicted a woman going to the doctor with a serious problem with her arm. The problem being that her arm was entirely detached from her body but all the doctor could see and comment on was that she was overweight. We focused on the issue of the doctor not being able to help with the actual issue because the patient was overweight but then the conversation shifted to the final panel of the comic.
The final panel was of the doctor after the appointment writing that her patient was angry and out of control because the patient clearly got angry because the doctor was only addressing the weight of her patient not the actual problem.
My thoughts
Fatphobia is something that I am sad to admit but I have internalized from my mother and it is something that I have devoted a lot of time and energy towards learning about because I am passionate about everyone feeling seen and heard and most importantly treated fairly especially in the eyes of medical professionals.
My own internalized fatphobia stems from a place of fear of becoming an unhealthy weight myself but mostly because of the connotation associated with being a weight that is not seen as normal or healthy.
Within the research I have been doing about weight and fatphobia in america I have been able to recognize that the fear that I have isnt mine alone, it is a fear that has been instilled in me from a society that doesnt believe that an individual has any worth if they are overweight.
Weight, aside from the color of someone's skin, is a physical characteristic that people feel like they can gather information about that person by just looking at them physically. There is a connotation with fatness in america that is that they are lazy and don't care about themselves.
The truth of the matter is, in our country it is easier and more cost effective for people to eat unhealthy foods than take the time to pay for fresh produce and things that have nutritional value. This is not the common trend of people across the world as in most other countries if someone is in a lower class they have a harder time accessing food. But in America, where there is a McDonalds on every corner it is easier for people to reach a McDonalds than a grocery store.
