WRITING IN CLASS
Ideas for
helping
writing
STRUCTURING AND ORGANISING
card planning
sketch drawing with arrows, linking separate items
LOOKING AT SAMPLE TEXTS
Not the best idea in the beginning, because it will be kind of like a model for their writing.
But handing it out later on, it can be extra support for them.
GETTING FEEDBACK AT DRAFTS
The most useful comments are those that will have an impact as the writing is evolving!
USING COMPUTERS
readable
multiple copies can be printed
no need to rewrite from scratch
direct sending via email
If students are unfamiliar with computers, you should teach them the basics of the text editor.
Ideas for
generating
ideas
BRAINSTORMING
write a topic/title on the middle of the board
tell the students to call out anything that comes to their mind connected with the topic
write up everything on the board
no discussion/comments!
after a while the ideas will probably start flowing
TEXT-STARTS
providing a text connected to the writing topic -
support
FAST-WRITING
handing out a blank page, but not letting the difficulty of starting to write to ruin the student's writing task
RULES: (they should...)
start writing about the topic
non stop writing
not put their pen down AT ALL
not worry about spelling, grammar...
"um, um, um" is okay!
not stop to go back and read what they have written
keep writing untiL "STOP!" (5-10 min)
