Ralph of Gael ( norman) - he married Roger de Breteuil's sister - reason loss of power and wealth, his land holdings were made smaller than his father.
Waltheof (saxon) - previously earl of northumbria, unclear reason, may have played both side, told William when revolt success seemed unlikely
Reasons - the men were angry about their loss of land, privileges and power. William had gone to normandy leaving Archbishop Lanfrac uncharge of England.
Planning - First planned at wedding. lots of important earls and bishops were there. Waltheof had good contacts with king sweyn so expected dane support.

Rebellion at Ely - 1070-71 - Danes returned led by the king sewn himself, he set up on isle of Ely. made alliances with locals inc Hereward the Wake (thegn land given away to normans) - Morcar imprisoned, Hereward escaped
