What Affect Does Colour Have On Memory Recall?
Ethics
Informed consent: Participants must give informed consent to participate in the study since it is unethical to experiment on people without their permission and a violation of their privacy. Participants must understand the activity in which they are taking part; a simple "yes" won't do. For this experiment, students must sign a consent document for the experiment in order to attest to their understanding of the issue and their willingness to take part in the experiment. If this is not done, the experiment is left to be considered unethical since it discourages autonomy and encourages unethical types of bias.
Voluntary Participation: Participants in the experiment must be given the option to take part voluntarily and may not be forced to do so in any way. Students have the option to opt out of the experiment before it is finished if they don't want to. Additionally, In this study specifically, students have the option to leave the experiment at any point if they feel they are having difficulty with the tasks in the experiment.
Right to Withdraw: Once the experiment has started, participants are free to stop it at any time without having to give a reason. This is advantageous since it will reduce the possibility that participants may feel humiliated by their outcomes. If they are experiencing trouble completing the exercises, students may leave the experiment at any time.
Confidentiality: Participants will feel more at ease disclosing information and expressing themselves in a safe setting if confidentiality is maintained. The identities of the participants must remain private because some aspects of the experiment may involve personal information. Confidentiallity will be present in this experiment, because participants will not need to provide personal information such as their name, they will simply be identified by their gender and age. e.g. Female, 26
Reporting Accurate Results: It is essential that the experiment reports accurate results and not make them up. In order for the result of this experiment to be a truthful representation of participants they will be recorded on a monitored google form where the results can not be tampered. This platform will also allow the data to be represented in different forms such as pie charts.
Debrief: communicating the entirety of the experiment and defining the specifics in order for the participant knows exactly what they are taking part in. For this experiment the participant will be told what is being studies and must read a detailed document that states the important elements of the study.
Colour And Memory
Research
The most important visual experience for humans has been found to be colour. It has been found to play a significant role in enhancing memory performance. Colour functions as a powerful information channel to the human cognitive system. This can be found effective in environments such as learning and education, marketing, communication and even sport.
(Malays J Med Sci. 2013 Mar 20
It is found that certain colours boost different elements of memory. Certain colours can help with concentration and attention span, facilitating memory retention and learning, this studies concluded that the colours red and blue are best suited for enhancing cognitive skills and improving brain function. ( The University Of British Columbia. 2009 Feb 5)
Colour
In the past colour has been known to represent different things such as emotion (red = anger), and symbolic meanings in different cultures (Green = love in Japan). Recent research has been found to show that colour plays many other significant roles in our lives such as boosting cognitive memory. For this experiment the primary colours are going to be used when testing the affect that different colours have on memory as they widely different and will produce a more accurate representation of which colour enhances memory the best.
Red : previous studies have shown that red has boosted the performance of detail oriented tasks such as memory, proof reading by 31% in comparison to other colours such as blue.
Blue :In tasks such as brainstorming and other activities that require creativity blue is found to help promote and produce nearly double as many creative outputs in comparison to other colours.
Yellow : previous research has continued to indicate that warmer colours such as yellow, orange and red help promote memory and enhance learning.
Memory
Memory is our ability to store and recall information. There are three major types of memory Sensory Memory, Short-Term Memory and Long-Term Memory
Sensory Memory : Is a form of memory that is created/based off of our senses and surroundings, it is a mental representation of how events look, sound, taste and feel. It also included long-term memory elements such as remembering the sound of someone's voice.
Short-Term Memory : also referred to as primary/active memory it is the place in which things you just experienced are stored, usually for up to 30 seconds. Short term memory creates a personal perspective of the information that the brain has just absorbs and will process it later. An example of short-term memory is remembering the phone number your friend dictated to you as you type it into your phone.
Long Term Memory : is an unlimited storage of information for an extended period of time even possibly for life, there are two types of long-term memory Declarative or explicit memory and non-declarative or implicit memory.
implicit Memory : refers to the type of long-term memory that is constantly being evoked, this included things that we do in our everyday life without even thinking twice. Activities such as remembering how to walk, talk eat and breathe are all types of explicit memory and are things we remember how to do without even thinking and will most probably remember how to do until we die.
Explicit Memory : Involves the recall of previously learnt information that requires conscious effort to recall. this can include remembering the items on your shopping list, the date of your family members birthdays and even names.
Possible Investigation Desgins
Quantitative Data
For This Investigation : All participants will undertake a test in a controlled condition. In this test the participants will be given a set of 15 words on a red background an will be given 1 minute to memorise these words, and then another minute to recall them. This process will then be repeated two more times however the second time the words will be on a blue background an don the last time they will be on a yellow. The number of words recalled for each colour will then be collected and and compared.
Experimental : Is the process of carrying out research in a controlled manner so that persionion is maximised, an example of this could be a series of tests..
Quantitative: Is a form of data that can be measured, there are many different types of quantitative data this includes, including Experimental, Survey and correlational research. Examples of qualitative data are height or how many people walk through a particular area between certain times in the day.
Qualitative
For This Investigation : Qualitative data collection is not a possible option for this investigation because you can not ask someone what colour they think helps there memory the best and receive reliable results.
Qualitative : In qualitative research, non-numerical data are gathered and assessed in order to comprehend concepts or personal opinions. There are a few types of qualitative data these consist of, observational, focus groups and case studies. An example of this is an interview or observing peoples habits.
Types Of Variables
Experimental Design Variables
Independent variable : Is the variable that does not depend on another.
In this Experiment: For this particular investigation the independent variable is the background colour that the words will be memorized on (red, blue and yellow). This is the independent variable because the colour does not require another variable in in the experiment in order to work.
Dependent Variable: The second type of variable is the dependent variable, this is the variable that that changes as result of the independent variable. In this case the colour of the background.
In This Experiment: In this study the dependent variable is the number of words participants are able to recall in the limited time slot. In this case however many words/15. This is the dependent variable because in order for the number words that are recalled to become real data for this experiment they depend on having a background colour. If the words do not have a background colour the data does not prove anything
Controlled Variable: is the variables in the experiment that remain constant thought out the entire investigation.
In This Experiment:
The amount of time given in each round of tests(1 minute to memorize 1 minute to recall)
.- the number of words that are given to memorize each round (15)
the level of difficulty the words are each round.
the same temperature of the room
time the tests are taken
-same location
the same level of noise (silent)
These are controlled variables because they are factors of the experiment that will remain the same in order to produce the most accurate results possible.
Sample Size
A sample size is the amount of people being tested. When looking at sample sizes the larger they are the more accurate and reliable the result are this is because when more people are tested you receive more results and are able to cancel out opportunities for bais results to occur.
Ideal sample size: When conducting an investigation there are usually some limitations to the sample sizes available. For this investigation, the ideal population would include all year 11 students is South Australia with a sample size of 200 randomly selected students with a variety of education levels, cultural backgrounds and a split number of genders. This is ideal because it enables a balanced result that takes all people into consideration.
Real Sample Size: Due to availability restrictions the sample size will be 50 randomly selected students from population that consists of all year 11 students at GIHS, this will allow the sample to still include the variety of participants however the data will not be able to be applied to as many situations as the ideal sample size would.
Affect
The term affect is used to discribe the production of change. In Psychology in particular affect refers to "somethings ability to influence your mind in a way that is linked to our body"

.
Recall
Recall describes the act of retrieving information or events from the past while lacking a specific cue to help in retrieving the information.
