How Do Relationships Between Organisms Affect Ecosystems?
Evidence 1: Parasitism and Predation
Parasitism and predation are both relationships where 1 organism benefits from harming another. In parasitism, the parasite lives either on or inside of the host and causes harm usually by consuming some part of it or its food. Some parasites eventually kill their hosts or follow a path between more than one host. Sometimes coevolution can lead to a parasitic relationship becoming less harmful or even helpful. If there is high competition between the parasites though, this leads to increased negative effects for the host. Predation is when an organism kills and consumes some or all of another. This type of relationship leads to an up-and-down movement between predator and prey populations. As the number of prey increase, so does the number of predators. As the number of prey decrease, because there are more predators, the number of predators follows.
Mare and Maven's relationship is a relationship where one of them harms the other. I think it's more like parasitism because Mare trusts and helps Maven and he uses and betrays her. Maven doesn't betray her right away, he waits after using her for pretty much all of the first book before he betrays her. Maven is more incented to betray her because he is competing with his brother for everything.
Conclusion
My understanding has changed because I learned about how vital parasitism is to an ecosystem's balance and that's probably the best thing I learned about.
Evidence 4: Managing an Ecosystem
If any one of the characters didn't have that specific relationship with Mare, things would have been very different. Without Maven betraying her, basically there wouldn't have been the need for three more books afterwards. If Mare didn't have Kilorn, she never would've been at the palace in the first place after trying to save him. If Mare didn't compete with Evangeline, she would've had and easier time in the palace and her final plan wouldn't have worked.
When managing an ecosystem you need to understand relationships between everything because everything affects another. If you remove a parasite or a predator from a group the host or prey will no longer be kept in check and their population will surge resulting in less of the resources they need. If you lose one of the organisms in a mutualistic relationship, this leads to harder times for the other. If you cause an increase in competition selective pressures will increase and more energy will be needed and injuries will be more likely.
Evidence 3: Competition
Competition is like Mare and Evangeline's relationship. They both are competing to survive the palace and Evangeline is bent on asserting her dominance. Sometimes Evangeline has the advantage because she is stronger and more experienced. Other times Mare does because she is a trickster and faster. They are both under a lot of pressure.
Competition is when two individuals both need a limited resource. They both expend energy and risk injury by trying to get more of the resource. Individuals can fight directly for resources, (Advantage to bigger and stronger) or they can compete indirectly(Advantage to quicker and smarter). Competition within a population can happen as well as between two species as a whole. In an ecosystem, competition leads to high selection pressure because only the best can make it. Competition, especially in a small area, can lead to even stronger competition as the resource is increasingly limited.
Evidence 2: Mutualism
Mutualism is when both organisms gain from the relationship. This exchange can be through providing a resource or a service. Sometimes through coevolution, this can become a dependent relationship, where 1 or both organisms need the other to survive. In an ecosystem, this can make the two organisms stronger because they defend each other. Or suppose 1 organism was suddenly wiped out in an ecosystem. In that case, the other might struggle to survive and disappear also, or change how it survives and start interacting with other species differently.
This is more like Mare's relationship with her friend Kilorn. They both are dependable friends and often look out for each other. Mare bargains for Kilorn to be saved from conscription and saves his life when he is captured on a mission for the rebel group the Scarlet guard. Kilorn is her friend, helps console her when her brother dies and deal with her emotions especially about her new powers and helps protect her family while she is gone.
Claim
My connection is to Mare from The Red Queen series and her relationships with different characters in the first book.
The different relationships between organisms affect an ecosystem because everything is interrelated and all they are all important to maintaining balance in a ecosystem.
