trait theory
- inherited or genetically predetermined qualities
- they are consistent in all situations and are predictable
Eysenck personalities
Extrovert
- they tend to be outgoing and are more suited to team sports - they are confident but are aroused more slowly
introvert
- they tend to have an inward focus and are more suited to individual sports
- they may lack confidence when in a group situation
- they become aroused quicker
stable
- they tend to have a predictable temperament and are more suited to sports needing high performance
- they are calm and relaxed, they have a consistent mood
- have low anxiety and have a realistic outlook
unstable
- they tend to have an unpredictable temperament and are not really ideal for participation in sport
- they have an inconsistency in their moods meaning they have higher levels of worry and anxiety
- they set unrealistic goals and have that perception
Narrow band approach
type A
- tends to become highly aroused
- they are highly competitive and likes to control situations
- they work at a fast rate and are ambitious
type B
- they are able to keep arousal low/controlled
- they are patient with themselves and others, as well as being calm under pressure
- they are less competitive
ineractionist theory
- a mixture between traits and the environment
- behaviour will change depending on the demands of the situation or environment
- personality is unpredictable
social learning theory
- copying the behaviour of others
- someone is more likely to copy another if they are significant
- behaviour is learned from the environment
- personality is predictable if the same situation reoccurs

- the characteristics of an individual is unique to themselves
- the pattern of psychological characteristics that make a person unique
