exam 3
ch 10
-
hydrologic cycle: movement of water thru biosphere
infiltration: water soaked into the soil
runoff: water that flows over the surface of groundwater + into streams
confined aquifer: aquifer sealed by different geologic materials + recharged uphill
unconfined aquifer: aquifer made of porous rock covered by soil where water can flow
rain shadow: one side of a mountain receives all the rain. the other does not. results in desert on one side, rainforest on the other.

-
ch 11
dust bowl: constant, steady blow of dirt formed from poor soil management practices by farmers
-
-
-
-
keita project: targeted soil degradation caused by over population and help to alleviate food insecurity and desertification
ch 12
-
subsistence farming: almost all of the crops/livestock are raised for the farmer + their family
modern farming: use of modern technology are used to increase farming production of the masses
gmo: organism receiving genes from another organism thru genetic engineering
transgenic: gene taken from another organism
marker-assisted breeding: traditional breeding sped up by using molecular biological techniques
-
slash/burn agriculture: a farming technique when trees are cut down and burned to clear and fertilize the land
-
ch 14
most common fossil fuels: coal, oil, natural gas
bitumen: a black sticky substance obtained from oil, used for covering roads or roofs
kerogen: a complex fossilized organic material, found in oil shale
-
power generator: converts mechanical energy to electrical energy
turbogenerator: turbine that drives an electrical generator
fossil fuel formation: remains of dead plants and animals exposed to heat and pressure within the earth's crust over hundreds of millions of years
supply-side policies: increase the availability/affordability of fuel
demand-side policies: increasing/decreasing demand for fuel influences real output + price
