Provisional Government
In December 1869, the Metis people declared a provisional Government at Fort Garry. Further they issued the 'Declaration of the people of Rupert's Land and the North-West." Louis Riel was selected as President.

Initial Agreement
In April 1869, Canada, the HBC, and Britain came to an agreement that in December Rupert's Land would be transferred to Canada. Surveyors would section in July.
Metis Resistance
In November McDougall (the Canadian Government Official) tried to enter Rupert's land but they stopped him from entering. Metis then took over Fort Garry which was a large HBC trading post.
