Traditional
Simple rows
The teacher moves up and down the rows of the desks
Desks are facing the teacher's desk and blackboard
Suitable for independent work not for group work
Easy to monitor during the exam or quizes
Teachers mostly use the direct instruction
It is not student centered and that leads to boredom
Small Groups
Improves the teamwork skills of students
Teacher can move easily among the groups
Suitable for group work
Focused on collaborative learning
Great for class or project discussions
Usually teacher's desk is located in front of the room and the student desks are situated in groups of four
It may cause noise in the classroom
The Horseshoe Arrangement
Desks are in a u-shape hence the name and facing toward one another
Teacher can stand in the middle of the classroom and move all arond the room
Suitable for class discussions
The open space allows the student to present
Social interaction is easy
Not suitable for exam or quizes
The Runway
Teacher's desk is usually in the corner and student desks are facing one another
This styles creates a large space in the middle of the room
Teacher can move and contact with the students easily
Suitable for debate and group work
Teacher can use the space for presentation or perform demonstrations for students
Paired Groups
Student desks are arranged in groups of two and they are facing the front of the classroom
Great for peer tutoring
works well for lab partners
The Roundtable
The desks' form is a circle within a space in the middle
It increases face to face interaction
Ice breaking activity can be used
Shy students can feel exposed
Suitable for class discussions
