COGNITIVE LEARNING STRATEGIES
Mnemonics (Dr. Deepak, 2023)
This involves utilising memory aids to assist learners to recall knowledge or information. Mnemonics can be acronyms, expressions or visual prompts to help learns recall information
Visualization (Dr. Deepak, 2023)
This consists of forming mental images to help understand and remember knowledge. It is easier to remember and when one can see the information in their minds
Rehearsal strategies (Pintrich, 1999)
This entails reading of items to be studied or the verbalizing of words out loud as a person reads a piece of script. Highlighting or underlying a piece of script can also be linked to rehearsal strategy. This is supposed to help learners choose critical information from written texts and keep this knowledge alive in working memory
Spaced repetition (Dr. Deepak, 2023)
This involves relooking at work and information at various intervals over a period of time. By doing this it helps prevent forgetting
Active Learning (Dr. Deepak, 2023)
Active learning – this entails actively participating in knowledge and information instead of inertly receiving it. By asking questions, making connections and relating the information to new circumstances, learners can strengthen their understanding and increase their ability to remember it
Retrieval Practice (Dr. Deepak, 2023)
This involves recalling knowledge from memory. By practicing this strategy learners are able to improve their memory making it easier to remember that information when it is needed.
Elaboration (Pintrich, 1999)
This involves expanding on new knowledge by linking it to existing information. In this way learners can improve on their understanding and retain the new information
Chunking (Dr. Deepak, 2023)
This consists of breaking down large pieces of info into smaller, more chunks. By doing this learners are able to process and retain information, as they are able to focus on smaller, more important parts of information at a point in time
Interleaving
(Dr. Deepak, 2023)
This involves mixing up various types of knowledge or assignments during a study lesson. By swapping between the different types of knowledge or assignments learners are required to continuously participate with the information avoid getting into the habit of becoming to reliant on a certain type of information
Summarising/ Paraphrasing (Oritz, 2022)
This involves exercising your brain and teaches you how to handle large amounts of information into one easy short summary
Organisational (Pintrich, 1999)
This involves choosing the most important idea from the script, highlighting the information to be learned and utilising various methods for choosing and organising the ideas. This has been said to lead to a more profound understanding of the information to be learned
