Chapter 1 Analysis

Keladry

Lady Alanna

King Jonathan

Lord Wyldon

Lady Ilane

Baron Piers

Anders

Lord Wyldon is a traditional, disciplined, and experienced veteran knight and trainer who adheres to the societal expectations of his time. Initially skeptical of Kel's ability to train as a page, he demands obedience and adherence to rules from his charges but ultimately shows fairness and willingness to consider new ideas by allowing Kel to train alongside the male pages.

King Jonathan is highly regarded for his just and fair nature and is respected by both Lord Wyldon and Kel. He has a keen interest in promoting gender equality and creating opportunities for women in traditionally male-dominated fields.

Anders is a nice and helpful person who cares about Kel's feelings. He supports and cheers her up when she is sad about her training and listens to her when she needs to talk. Anders treats Kel with respect and thinks she is talented, even though it is not common for girls to train as knights in their society.

Baron Piers is portrayed as a strict and traditional character in Chapter 1, who believes in upholding societal norms and expectations. He is initially skeptical of Kel's desire to train as a page but ultimately allows her to train with the other pages. However, he warns Kel that she will face challenges and discrimination due to her gender.

Lady Alanna is portrayed as a brave and determined character in Chapter 1. She is a character who is confident and skilled. She impresses those around her with her abilities and is unique in the story because of her boldness and independence. She is chasing her dreams with courage and determination.

Lady Ilane is shown to be kind and supportive towards Kel, encouraging her to pursue her dream of becoming a knight despite societal expectations. She listens to Kel's concerns and offers guidance and support, creating a positive and supportive environment for her.

"Lord Wyldon was known for his dislike of female warriors".

Kel is a determined and courageous character who is highly motivated to become a knight, despite facing societal expectations and obstacles as a girl. She is compassionate and kind, with a strong sense of empathy, always willing to help others. But, she is very afrid of height. Additionally, Kel values honesty and integrity, and is fiercely loyal to her friends and ideals, always standing up for them no matter the challenge.

"Kel's foot slipped. She looked down to find a better place to set it and froze. She was only seven feet above the water, but the distance seemed more like seventy to her. A roar filled her ears and her head spun. Cold sweat trickled through her clothes. She clung to the face of the bluff with both arms and legs, sick with fear".

""Who judges her fitness?" inquired the king".

"He was a short, stocky man. Keladry had his build, delicate nose, and dreamy, long-lashed hazel eyes. Her brown hair was several shades lighter than his".

"Just do what you're told. Don't complain. If you can't do it, say that you failed, not that you can't. No one can finish every task that's given. What your teachers don't want is excuses, or blaming someone else, or saying it's unfair. They know it's unfair. Do what you can, and take your punishment in silence."

"You can say what you feel. We are no longer among the Yamanis." She was a thin, elegant woman, taller than her husband by nearly a head, with hair that had gone white very early in life and a deep, musical voice. All Keladry had from her was height. At the age of ten the girl was already five feet tall and still growing".

You see King Jonathan is being fair to Kel. This shows to me that he is very fair, and wants Kel to train as a knight.

"If the king had not forbidden her to challenge men on personal grounds years before, she would have taken Wyldon out to the dueling court and made him regret his words".

This tells me that Lady Alanna is brave and could even challenge men to fight with her. But since, it is forbidden she can't.

This means that he is her father and is strict and discrimination due to her gender.

This is her looks and she is very supportive towards Kel, and want to encourage her to become a knight.

This tells me that she is very scared of heigths even it is not that high.

This shows to me that Anders is helping Kel to become a knight, and he is really supportive and cares a lot about Kel.

This means that he doesn't like training female warriors. He thinks like that because he think female is weaker, fragile, get scared easily and ect.
