ANIMALS
Natural Science
Difference between wild animals and farm animals.
Activity:
Learners must cut out each animal and paste it if they think they would most likely see it on a farm or in natural habitats-jungle/forest.
Wild animals live in natural habitats such as jungles, forests without human interaction and intervention. They look after themselves. Farm animals are raised by the farmer and kept on farms for agricultural purposes.
[Twinkl.co.uk.(n.d)].
Types of wild and farm animals
.
Farm animals: sheep, horses, cows, chickens, etc. Wild animals: elephants, lions, giraffes, leopard, tiger, zebra, cheetah, etc.
(South Africa,2011:43)
Activity:Learners must sort the animals according to their type(farm or wild animals) and listen to the sound of the animals and guess which animal it is.
The uses of farm animals.
Activity:
Match the animal to the animal products they help produce or how they help humans. (worksheet will be provided)
Sheep: reared for meat(food) and wool (clothes). Horses: used for racing and transporting goods. Female cows povides with milk(diary) and male cows provides us with beef(meat).
Define Camouflage
Camouflage is when animals blend in their surroundings to hide themselves from other living things.Examples: leaves, rocks, grass, trees, sand, etc
Activity:
What can you feel? Run different textures with nature items animals use to camouflage themselves with and allow learners to explore and discuss the different tetures.
Technology
Materials for sculping the animal
Modeling clay
:
a malleable substance that is used for building and sculpting.
Paper mache:
malleable mixture of paper and glue, or paper, flour, and water, that has become hard when dry, used to make boxes, trays, animals, etc.
Activity
:
Learners must choose one animal (farm or wild) to mold a animal structure using modelling clay to form the chosen animal.
Basic structure of a animal
Discuss the basic structure of a animal is: head, tail, body, limbs and sense organs.
Activity
:
Mold the parts of the animal's body you have chosen using the modeling clay and leave to dry.
Habitat design
Activity:
The learners must make a miniature habitat for their chosen animal.
Open discussion: Discuss the different shelters/habitats for animals among farm animals and wild animals.
Social Science
Animal survival
Adaptation
help animals survive in its habitat-all animals need food, air, water, shelter and space to survive. Farmers provide the animals with food, shelter and protect them against diseases and other issues where wild animals take care of themselves
. Manfredo (2008)
states that humans care for wildlife animals
.
Activity:
Learners will complete worksheet to understand the basic needs of animals. The learners can fill in the worksheet by cutting out pictures from magazines or draw pictures themselves about the needs of animals.
Climate change
Threating to wildlife-rising temperatures lower survival rates due to changes that lead to less food, less successful reproduction ,etc. Thermal stress is the most intriguing factor affecting livestock production in the ever changing climate scenario
(Sejian, 2015:1).
.
Activity- Discussion
:
Discuss the causes of climate change and how it effects animals
.
Animal protection
Wild animals
protect themselves by using camoflouge to hide their identity and to adapt to their environment.
Farm animals
gets protected by farmers ensuring that fences and gates are kept in proper conditions.
Activity:
Animal camouflage.Learners must identify the animals in the pictures by filling in the correct name.
