Kayla Rodriguez P3 Reproductive System - Coggle Diagram
Kayla Rodriguez P3 Reproductive System
Events of hormonal cycles
Anterior pituitary releases a surge of LH which triggers ovulation
Follicular cells become corpus luteum cells, which secrete estrogens and progesterone
Follicular cells produce and secrete estrogens estrogen maintains secondary sex characteristics and causes endometrium to thicken
if secondary oocyte is not fertilized the corpus luteum degenerates and no longer secretes estrogens and progesterone
FSH stimulates maturation of dormant follicle
As the concentrations of estrogens and progesterone decline, blood vessels in the endometrium constrict
Anterior Pituitary glands secretes FSH and LH
The uterine lining disintegrates and sloughs off, producing a menstrual flow
The anterior pituitary gland is no longer inhibited and again secretes FSH and LH
The menstrual cycle repeats
Anatomy of Female Structures
Clitoris
to experience pleasure during sexual intercourse
Vestibules
provides lubrication
Labia Minus
forms a hood for the clitoris
uterine tubes
is what leads from ovary to the uterus and is where fertilization occurs
Labia Majora
encloses and protects other external reproductive organs
Vagina
receives the penis during sexual intercourse and serves as a birthing canal for fetus
Uterus
receives embryo from uterine tube and maintains development of the embryo and the fetus
Ovaries
Produce hormones and produce eggs
Disorders
Chlamydia
Gonorhea
Gentital Herpes
Hepatitis
Syphilis
Trichomoniasis
Aids
Genital warts
PID
Methods and Classification of Contraceptives
Combine Hormone Contraceptives
has estrogen and progesterone to prevent pregnancy
patches
Injection Contraception
Injection of a progesterone derivative which prevents follicle maturation and ovulation
works for 3 months
Chemical Barriers
has spermicides
more effective when used with creams, condoms, etc
Contraceptive implants
implantation of a rod that has progestin under the skin in the arm
lasts for 3 years
Mechanical Barriers
prevents sperm from entering vagina during sex
Condoms, diaphragm, cervical cap
Sterilization
surgical method of permanently preventing pregnancy
Rhythm Method
abstinence from having sex during ovulation and is not effective
IUD's
Objects implanted in the uterus and it prevents implantation of embryo by inhibiting growth of endometrium
Coitus Interrupts
withdrawal of penis from vagina before ejaculation
not very effective
Hormones of the Reproductive System
Male
Testosterones
stimulates development of male reproductive organs
responsible for male secondary sexual characteristics
Follicle
stimulates sertoli cells of seminiforus tubules to respond to testosterone
LH
Promotes development of interstial cells of testes, which can secrete male hormones
Gonadotrophin
releases hormone GnRH
Secreted by hypothalmus and triggers production of gonadotrophins from anterior pituitary gland
Female
Estrogens
Responsible for female secondary sexual characteristics like breast development, sex organ enlargement, etc
Androgens
produce some changes at puberty, growth of pubic in axillary hair; low androgen concentration allows broadening of hips
Progesterones
triggers uterine changes during menstrual cycle
GnRH
stimulates the anterior pituitary to produce LH and FSH
Functions of Reproductive Systems
Male
to produce androgens
promote spermatogenesis
transport into female reproductive system for fertilization
Female
provide environment for a developing a fetus
Transport these cells to the site of fertilization
produce and maintain sex cells
deliver, feed, and nurture offspring
produces female sex hormones
Anatomy of male Structures
Epidymis
tube connected to testes to ductus deferens
site of sperm maturation
Ductus Deferens
to transport sperm cells from the epidymis to the ejaculatory duct
Testes
produces male sex hormones and produces male gametes
Prostate Gland
secretes a thin, milky fluid that has citrate, a nutrient for sperm and prostate a specific antigen to liquify semen
Bulbourethral Gland
secretes mucus into the urethra to lubricate the tip of penis in response to sexual stimulation
Semen
to fertilize female egg
Scrotum
protects and helps regulate the temperature of the testes
Penis
for urination and sexual intercourse
Seminal Vesicle
Secretes a fluid that make up a part of semen and has fructose to nourish sperm
