Modal Auxiliary Verbs (Past)

Could is an auxiliary verb, a modal auxiliary verb. We use could to:

 talk about past possibility or ability
 make requests

Structure of Could

Subject + could + main verb

We use could to talk about what was possible in the past, what we were able or free
to do:

I could swim when I was 5 years old.

We use could (positive) and couldn't (negative) for general ability in the past.

should

Expresses mild obligation.

could

Expresses possibility.

would

expresses reservation

must

Expresses strong obligation

Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all
members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world.

Article 1
All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.

Everyone has the right to life, liberty and the security of person.
