Classroom Arrangement Styles
The Horseshoe Arrangement
Just like the name itself, desks are situated in U shape and next to one another.
It can be used for discussions. Ss can help each other out.
There is an open space. Ss may take center stage. And also kinesthetic activities can be conducted. Besides, T interacts with Ss in a walk.
Downside of it is that Ss may copy each other's work.
Traditional
Desks are placed as columns in a row towards teacher and board.
There are spaces where T walks around the class and interacts with Ss physically. T can observe all Ss.
Ss work independently. It is not suitable for group work.
It is not learner centered, which leads boredom on Ss.
It is practical for conducting lectures and exams
Small Groups
Desks are located randomly in the class as groups of four.
It enables cooperative learning. Teamwork, discussions and projects can be applied.
T walk around freely and facilitate the learning.
Downside is that the class will get loud. Besides, not everyone will contribute the groupwork equally.
The Runway
Desks face to one another and there a space for T to walk freely.
It is great for debates that Ss easily share their ideas.
The class might get loud. Additionally. Ss at the end of the row might feel isolated.
Paired Groups
.Two desks are located next to each other.
T walks more freely in contrast to other styles.
It is excellent for peer tutoring.
The roundtable
Desks are rounded and faced to each other.
It can be used for ice-breaker activities.
It facilitates communication and discussions.
As a downside, shy students may feel exposed by others.
