Hemostasis - Coggle Diagram
Hemostasis
Primary Hemostasis
- formation of platelets plug
- when platelets low and PT, PTT, FDP normal then issue is with platelet quantity
- ITP main differential
-
Platelets
-
Quality
Buccal Mucosal Bleeding Time
- possible to have normal platelet numbers, but dysfunctional platelets
- make an incision on mucous membrane, start timer and time how long it takes for the bleeding to stop
-
Platelet Quantity
Increased destruction or consumption
- will see petechial hemorrhages
DIC
- increased consumption
- moderate thrombocytopenia
ITP
- increased destruction
- MARKED thrombocytopenia
- causes: autoimmune, drugs, rickettsia, bacteria, viruses
Decreased production in bone marrow
- eg. neoplasia, drugs, infectious agents -> myelophthisis (irregular cells in bone marrow pushing regular cells out)
- if you see megakaryocytes in bone marrow sample, you know production is working, so it's either increased destruction or consumption
-
-
Thrombocytosis
- pretty rare
- causes: rebound -> bone marrow responds aggressively and releases a ton of platelets, inflammatory disease (platelets are inflammatory cells and will be increased during chronic inflammation), splenic contraction, hemorrhage (blood sucking parasites)
