Ludwig Erhard as Chancellor: 1963-1966
In 1965, there was a recession and by 1966 inflation was high, so Erhard had to cut his spending plans and raise interest rates. He suggested that everyone should work an extra hour a week which was hugely unpopular.
The Grand Coalition: In 1966, the CDU/CSU and the SPD came together to form a temporary alliance in order to soothe the economic crisis. At first it was generally supported but in May 1968, criticism increased as they added an amendment that allowed an elected committee to take emergency action in the event of civil unrest or war. People feared they were facing another article 48 situation.

However, his social reform programme demanded more government spending and led to Germany's growing levels of inflation.
His government was hit with a wave of terrorism in the early 1970's

Helmut Schmidt as chancellor
1974-1982
He had to deal with economic problems and further political division as well as arguments over nuclear arms.
Minister of Economics and Finance before 1974 which gave him a reputation for being tough and decisive.
A number of pressure groups emerged in the 1970's campaigning for environmental issues and nuclear issues. The Greens party was born in 1979 and they attracted the left wing SPD voters

Sleaze damaged his reputation - it was found that the industry had been making private an illegal donations to the coalition parties
