"solitary" perhaps suggesting neglected, innocence, quiet, content.
"Oyster" - common food at the time as it was cheap - shows he was an ordinary boy. They are hard shell - suggest he is closed off from society. Once irritated by sand it forms a pearl inside suggesting that there is something worth while within scrooge, something good hidden behind his cold heart.

This could reflect Scrooge's cold and misery personality. It could also imply that Scrooge enjoys to be alone, without happiness-this being suggested by the lack of light.
