labeling and self fulfilling prophecy-some teachers label according to steriotypes which can develop into self fullfilling prophocys
not all students accept lables. too determanistic
streaming and setting- streeming-taught in the same ability group for all of their lessons. Setting-taught in ability based groups for ech different subject. Studies show mc students have a greater chance of being put in a higher set. This limits their abiklity as they are put with worse teachers, students who misbehave and it damages their self confidence
pupul subcultures- pro school subculture vs anti school subculture
middle class curiculum- school is taught on middle class knolage which puts wc kids at a disadvantage
pupil identitys- archer "nike identity" wc girls felt they had to change how they talked and presented themselves in order to be sucsesfull. They did this by wearing nike which gave them symbolic capital. However this was against the dress code but they did it anyway.
marketisation- schools are increasingly being run like buisnesses which has led to cream skimming and an A-C economy

material deprevation- to do with money and acess to resources e.g. lack of resources, poor diet, overcrowding, seccond hand school uniform , carnt afford travel costs
fear of debt- prevents many wc from applying to univercity and staying at home if they do which limits their oppertunitys

cultural factors
parents attitudes- wc parents may be unwilling or unable to help with education as they didnt go to school themselves or didnt do well so dont see the point. They place less value on education e.g. not going to parents evening

language use- wc use restricted code. Mc use elaborated code. The teacher, text books and tests use elaborated code so wc students struggle to understand/ do well.
the teachers are trained to adapt
subculture- sugarman claims that the wc has a p[articular culture consisting of 4 subcultures: fatalism-nothing can be done to chane their situation so dont work for it. Collectivism-socialising is more important. Immediate gratification- want rewards now so dont see point in univercity. Present time orientation- want to have fun now, no long term goals
