Topic 2
Eukaryotic Cell Organelles
Cellulose Cell Wall
Supports cell and prevents cell changing shape, provides rigidity
Chloroplasts
Site of photosynthesis to create glucose
Plant cells only
Vacuole
Maintains pressure inside the cell and isolates any unwanted chemicals inside the cell
Nucleus
Controls cells activity, controls transcription of DNA- makes mRNA
Mitochondria
Site of aerobic respiration to produce ATP
Cell Membrane
Regulates movement in and out of the cell
Ribosomes (80s)
Translation of mRNA and site of protein synthesis
Lysosomes
contains digestive enzymes, lysozymes, which digest invading cells and break down worn out components of cells
Animal cells only
Golgi Apparatus
Process, package and transports lipids and proteins. Modifies proteins by addition of carbohydrates
Also makes lysosomes
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Translation of mRNA and site of protein synthesis, folds and transports protein through the cell
Vesicles
Stores lipids and proteins- transports them around and out of the cell
Centriole
Involved in anaphase of mitosis and meiosis, pulls chromosomes to the poles
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Synthesis and process of lipids
Flagellum
Propels cell (sperm) enables movement
Animal cells only
