Consequences of climate change for
Agriculture/Food security
Climate change can affect the production fo the crops as well as types of crops grown in an area. This is because agricultural inputs like water irrigation and amount of solar radiation are changing which affect the growth of plants.
Agriculture
Climate change could affect different areas differently as the south side of the country which is already warm and dry will have a negative impact compared to the wetter north and east sides. The upland areas of a country are likely to have a rise in production as there are warm and cosy temperatures but the lowlands would suffer from drought.
Water stress and insecurity
Lack of access to water is an issue of concern - especially in developing countries.
Water scarcity creates competition for water resources among own people and also among countries. Conflicts could become serious and lead to war.
Global warming leads to recued availability of water, hydropower potential and change the seasonal flow of rivers.
Water resources
Floods due to heavy downpours are something that countries would be facing.
Extreme winters with heavy rainfall increases the risk of flash flooding, river flooding and rise in the level of seawater.
Sea levels
Sea level rise is due to thermal expansion as well as melting of ice-sheets. Warming seas could cause more intense tropical storms.
Likely that the sea level rise will severely affect those living in coastal areas as more extreme storms will cause more erosion.
Ecosystem and biodiversity
Climate Change has the potential for their to be an enormous biodiversity loss as many won't be able to survive the rise in temperatures.
Species from the tropics to the poles are at risk.
Marine life will be severely affected as the concentration of carbon dioxide dissolved in the oceanic water will rise. This will negatively affect shell-forming organisms, corals and their ecosystem.
Health
A warmer unstable climate would lead to higher levels of some air pollutants, increased transfer of diseases through unclean water and contaminated food.
More flooding creates a more suitable environment to disease-carrying insects like mosquitoes. Malaria cases are now being reported more often.
Effusion of greenhouse gases has led to depletion of the ozone layer which protects us from the harmful sun radiations. Because of this depletion, there are more cases of skin cancer. It could also lead to a rise in the number of people with eye diseases like cataract.
Although there are many negative changes, there are some positive.
Many crops like peaches and oranges which were not grown in the UK can be grown in the UK
Less burden to heat rooms
Better transportation systems due to less extreme winters.
