Plate Tectonics

Structure of the earth
Inner core, outer core, mantle, asthenosphere, lithosphere, crust
Inner core
Solid ball of Iron/Nickel, very hot due to radioactive decay and pressure, the heat is responsible for Earth's internal energy

Asthenosphere is a semi molten layer that moves due to convection currents - the movements are powered from the heat from the core
Lithosphere is broken up into plates, the majority is in the mantle and the top is the crust
Crust
The very top of lithosphere, oceanic plate is dense and is destroyed by plate movement, continental plate is less dense and is not destroyed
Plate Tectonic theory
Plate tectonic theory is how the lithosphere is broken up into plates, these are moved by convection currents that occur in the asthenosphere because of the magma rising and falling due to heat levels affecting density (hotter magma is the less dense as particles spread out
Hotspots are not relate to plate tectonics activity, the magma burns through weaker areas of the crust to form volcanoes, the pluem stays in the same place but the plates move which sometimes causes a chain of islands
alfred Wegner came up with continental drift - he has biological evidence fossils in india and australia comparable and geological evidence - jigsaw fit
palaeomagnetism causes symmetrical bands of alternating magnetic polarity = evidence of sea floor spreading
