- - - - In a constant battle with his own brain, Caden get increasingly paranoid and anxious throughout the book, until he is omitted to a mental hospital to help him cure his mental instability.
      - Who can he trust? Caden comes across multiple situations where he doesn't know who to trust in both reality and on the captain's ship.
- - - - "I am your captain!"..."Or maybe you answer to the parrot."..."That mutinous fowl! He sows seeds of sedition among the crew even as he sits on my shoulder."..."Does Calliope say there'll be a mutiny? Does she say the bird will prevail?"
        
        "I'll ask her"
        
        "Good boy. I knew you were loyal." Then he whispers, "When the time comes , I shall let you do the honors."
        
        "What honors?"
        
        He smiles. "The honors of killing the parrot."
    - - "I'm just wondering what's down there."
        
        "Stowage. Stowage and steerage and sewage and queerage."..."Wits about you! Do not be distracted by shiny things, and do not forget what I said about the captain. What may need to be done."
        
        "Mutton, mutiny, destiny, desperately."
        
        "Very good, very good, I have faith in you Seaman Bosch. Faith that you'll do the right thing when a thing is right to do."
      - Around the same time that Caden meets Calliope, he meets Callie in reality. Calliope sits still and watches in front of the boat to see far out, Callie sits in front of a window to see out of the hospital. Callie and Calliope are also explained as a beautiful woman/girl that is cold and enjoys the comfort of Caden. These two characters also show similarity when Calliope is released from the ship. Callie is also sent home from the hospital at the same time. When Calliope leaves she takes viscous seahorses with her because they were destroying the ship and the crew. Maybe when Callie left she took away Caden's attachment to his mental illness and want to stay in the hospital because she was there.
  - - - “What do you mean he wants to kill you?” “Caden, this is serious. If there’s a boy at school threatening you, you have to tell me what's going on.” “Have you reported this kid to your teachers?” “No.” Caden says “What has he done? Has he openly threatened you?” “No.” “...Does this kid bring some sort of weapon to school?” “No. Well, maybe. Yeah---yeah, I think he maybe has a knife.” “You’ve seen it?” “No, I just know. He’s the type of kid who’d have a knife, y’know?”
