Dienes 6 stages of learning
Stage 1: Free Play
Active exploration of the physical environment
may not notice objects with common characteristics
Freely interact directly with physical learning materials
Through activities, learners can become
familiar with learning situation
exposure to basic concepts
Stage 3: Search for
Communalities / Comparison
understand the concept of
mathematical structures and rules
common characteristics related to learning and play materials
comparing in sizes/ shapes/ pattern
Stage 4: Representation
Use of representation such as tables, drawings, pictures
or systems that can help their memory
Identify abstract concept of Mathematical
structures and represent using own words
Objects may not look like the actual object drawn
Able to determine different sizes e.g. big and small
Stage 5: Symbolization
Learners will discover the use of symbols (e.g.
language)
Represent mathematical concepts using
symbols
Introducing words such as small and big
Can challenge the children if they understand the meaning of words. If child is able to link word to objects, shows understanding
Stage 6: Formalization
able to establish some orders for
example in mathematical concepts
The relationships and properties of all 2D and 3D are categorized, ordered, and recognized
part of the structure of the discipline of maths
rules and properties are recognized as structure of system evolves
Stage 2: Game Stage
gradually recognise that play and learning have some things in common
some regularities
