flashpoint in Cold War tensions - removed possibility reunification for Germany in near future
CONCLUSIONS
The speed of the Berlin Blockade, despite its somewhat legitimate economic motives, showed that USSR were always prepared to force their way into contention for power in a unified Germany.
Although the Allies were fortunate to be able to maintain the Berlin Airlift, their determination to do so revealed the importance of Germany in the Cold War, both as an ideological battleground and a potential economic powerhouse.
The resolution displayed that neither side was willing to risk escalation but would oppose the other if necessary; the nuclear aspect surely weakened Stalin’s resolve as well
The Blockade ultimately solidified the East-West division and pushed both sides further from reconciliation, with the construction of NATO establishing the military aspect of the Cold War.
