Beliefs
Jews believe that God appointed the Jews to be his chosen people in order to set an example of holiness and ethical behaviour to the world.
-
Jews believe that there is a single God who not only created the universe, but with whom every Jew can have an individual and personal relationship.
They believe that God continues to work in the world, affecting everything that people do.
Judaism does not forbid abortion, but it does not permit abortion on demand. Abortion is only permitted for serious reasons.

The synagogue is the Jewish place of worship, but is also used as a place to study, and often as a community centre as well.

Foundations
Judaism was founded by Moses, although Jews trace their history back to Abraham.
Judaism has a rich history of religious text, but the central and most important religious document is the Torah.
Judaism is very much a family faith and the ceremonies start early, when a Jewish boy baby is circumcised at eight days old, following the instructions that God gave to Abraham around 4,000 years ago.
The Sabbath is part of the deal between God and the Jewish People, so celebrating it is a reminder of the Covenant and an occasion to rejoice in God's kept promises.

Holocaust
More than 1.5 million children from across Europe were murdered under the Nazi regime. The Nazis, obsessed with the notion of creating a 'biologically pure', 'Aryan' society, deliberately targeted Jewish children for destruction, in order to prevent the growth of a new generation of Jews in Europe.
The Jewish Community has its own memorial day for the Holocaust. Yom Ha-Shoah. Shoah is the Hebrew word for 'whirlwind' or 'destruction'. It is the term used to described the conflagration that swept up six million Jewish souls between 1938 and 1945. At the same time, it marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising of 1943.
Yom Hashoah is a day set aside for Jews to remember the Holocaust. The name comes from the Hebrew word 'shoah', which means 'whirlwind'.
In Israel Yom Hashoah is one of the most solemn days of the year. It begins at sunset on 26th Nissan and ends, like all traditional Jewish special days, the following evening. During Yom Hashoah memorial events are held throughout the country, with national ceremonies being held at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. (Yad Vashem is the Jewish people’s memorial to the murdered Six Million.)
