Mitosis
(PMAT)
-
Definition:
Process of nuclear division involving equal division of one nucleus into two genetically identical nuclei
-
Stage 1: Prophase
- Chromatin condense, coil and shorten to form chromosomes
- Each chromosome consists of two sister chromatids attached to the centromere.
Sister chromatids are genetically identical as they are 2 identical copies of DNA produced by DNA replication.
-
-
Stage 4: Telophase
- The chromosomes reach the poles of the cell.
- Nuclear envelope re-forms around the chromosomes at each pole.
- Chromosomes decondense to form chromatin.
