14.4 Delivery of a Fact-to-Face Talk

position self on either side of screen to avoid obstructing view
eye contact
keep body facing the audience, look directly at audience
dress
look professional, business casual or formal depending on event
gestures
use gestures but don't fidgit and don't stand ridgid
volume
deep tone, not too soft
movement
don't sway or pace, only move to point at slides, turninig halfway to slide not turning back to audience
timing
stay within time but don't rush through information, skip slides if necessary
explain slides
keep slides and speech in sync explain all info and figures on slide, relate figures to overall context
speech
use simple language, spoken (not written) language, don't read notes and bullets, be enthusiastic, avoid uh, etc
flow
build in transitions between major sections, inclued in notes
arrive early
familiarize yourself with venue and set up presentation, prepare multiple formats of slides
ending
verbal cue end and summerize, mention any next steps
14.3 Designing Effective Slides
font
use standard, easy to read fonts at least 20pt and color contrasting background
limit text
text should be bulleted, within 5 words per bullet and 5 bullets per slide, use speech to fill in info
design
keep uniform style on all slides and titles in the same spot
avoid bright and contrasting colors and animations
figures
include easily visable title, no captions rather verbally fill in info
keep slides simple
slides should be visually apealing, contain enough information but simple and easily understood
don't clutter
limit number of bars and lines on graph, include key if necessary, 30-60 seconds to explain figures
graphics
visuals are prefered over text and graphs opposed to tables

core slide
at begining, include most important figure and infomation, ensure compelling and understandable
target audience
determines what to emphisize and how much background to include
identify purpose
presentation should revolve around purpose (mention at begining) and take-home message (mention at end)
overview slide
at very begining of long presentations include slide titles to outline
organize similar to a research article
overview, background and purpose, approach and findings, conclusion

notes
preparing and memorizing notes might be helpful when practicing and as backup while presenting
notecards should be easy to read, in outline form (except for begining and ending sentences and transitions)
programs
know what programs are available to create slide presentations and how to use them
preparing
prapare slides and graphics ahead of time and practice presentation to ensure flow and timing, videotaping might be helpful
14.6 Questions-and-Answer Period
Dos
be courteous, repeat question, answer entire audience, admit when don't know, address after session if long answer/discussion
Don'ts
be inturupted, make up answers, direct answer to questioner, argue

test all tech, control audience view, more important to keep attention, chat windows affect how audience interacts
