background
-
the OT sets out how God had chosen the Jews as his special people and gave them the land of Palestine. The Jews were invaded by the Babylonians and they defeated them returning back to Israel. 50 years later the Persians took over. They remained in charge for 200 years, where they were defeated by the Greeks. Then the Romans took over. they divided it into districts and Judea had a puppet king in charge - King of the Jews
the area of Palestine was very politically volatile with the Romans as the occupying force. It was strategically important for the Romans as it was near Africa and Europe. The jews hated the Romans and looked to the promises of a Messiah to set them free.
Different groups had different ideas on the Messiah. there was:
Pharisees and scribes of the law
Saducees
Zealots- terrorist group
Essens- lived in the desert
herodians- supporters of Herod
Samaritans- lived in Samaria

politcal situation
the political situation was very volatile and the Romans were the occupying force. The Herod family were 'puppet kings' and not liked by Jews. The Sanhedrin was the ruling Jewish council in return for working with the Herodian Kings and the Romans. They were allowed to go to the temple
This meant for Jesus that the JRL are the ones taking action on Jesus on the charge of blasphemy but presented Jesus to the Romans as claiming to be the King. The response to Jesus by the JRL was coloured by the unstable political situation. Jesus teachings or the idea he might be the Messiah had the potential to end religious freedoms and privileges the Jews enjoyed. Jesus messages threatened the authority of the JRL
