DATA ANALYSIS
INFORMATION GATHERING STRATEGIES
REVIEWING RELEVANT LITRETURES
Review relevant documents when there is no budget for needs analysis
Disadvantages- The information found in documents can be outdated, inaccurate, incomplete and disorganized
CONDUCTING DIRECT OBSERVATIONS
When the training goal is to teach a new skill or change a behavior.
Then document your observations of both the current and desired performance.
INTERVIEWS
Interviews work very well for gathering information about current business needs, performance and audience analysis.
The main problem with interviews, however, is that they can be biased as they rely on reactions and
opinions of respondents.
FOCUS GROUPS
Focus groups are a good way to collect information from many different people
It takes a lot of time to analyze the information gathered from the entire group
There are participants that dominate the discussion
They lack anonymity
SURVEYS
Surveys are the most commonly used tool for conducting needs analysis
Surveys also require clear and accurate wording of each question.
Disadvantage- if participants do not interpret the question correctly, the results will be skewed.
TYPES OF QUESTIONS AND RATING SCALES USED IN SURVEYS
Multiple-choice questions
Multiple choice questions can ask for one or more answers
Dichotomous questions
Dichotomous questions are yes or no questions.
Open-ended questions
Open ended questions are very effective because participants have to think about their answer before
providing a response.
The likert scale
Likert scales are linear rating scales.
Semantic differential
Semantic differential is a type of survey used to measure the meaning of concepts, events and objects based on people's perceptions and attitudes.
