Qualitative data

:smiley: greater external validity, provides a more meaningful insight into the ppts worldview
expressed in words, rather than numbers/stats. eg a written description of the thoughts, feelings and opinions of a ppt
:cry: difficult to analyse. cannot be summarised statistically so that patterns and comparisons within and between data may be hard to identify
quantitative data
:smiley: data is relatively simple to analyse, therefore comparisons between groups can be easily drawn

:smiley: authentic data obtained from the ppts themselves for the purpose of the particular investigation

refers to original data that has been collected specifically for the purpose of the investigation by the researcher

secondary data

:cry: the data may be outdated or incomplete. may not quite match the researchers needs or objectives.
data that has been collected by someone else. the data already exists before the psychologist begins their research
meta analysis
process of combining the findings from a number pf studies on a particular topic. the aim is to produce an overall statistical conclusion based on a range of studies
