extremely powerful organisation in medieval Europe.
church encouraged people that it was a punishment from God.This prevented people from finding causes, The church made sure that scholars of medicine learned from Galens beliefs.
the church outlawed directions so it was difficult to to study human anatomy for themselves.
prayer and repentance - sick encouraged to pray, also holy shrines could cure illness. many doctors had superstitious beliefs.
astrology- movement of stars and planets have an effect on the earth and on people and causes disease. medieval doctors owned a type of calendar which related to peoples illness.
medicine was dominated by the four humours created by the hippocrates. they needed to be balanced in order to be healthy. disease could be treated by opposites.
blood letting and purging - if someone had too much blood inside of them the doctor would treat by bloodletting. people were accidentally killed if too much blood taken.
miasma - bad air comes from dead bodies, abattoirs,. originated from Ancient Greek. it was very influential it lasted until 1860. promoted people to do hygienic things.
purifying the air - led people to believe purifying or cleaning the air to prevent sickness and improve health. physicians carried posies or oranges around with them to prevent themselves from catching the desease.
remedies bought from apothecary or wise women contained herbs, spices and animal parts. passed down in books. lucky charms used.
surgery
medieval surgery was very dangerous - no way to prevent blood loss, infection or pain. only attempted rarely for minor procedures. few university trained as surgery as a whole was not a respected profession.
few public hospitals so most sick people were treated at home. most hospitals were set up and run by monasteries , main purpose not to treat disease but to care for ill.
The Black Death - series of plagues that swept europe. - bubonic plague - spread by bites of flees caused high temps and headaches.
some people believed the Black Death was a judgement from god. some blamed humours, some maisma others atrology.
some people in Winchester thought you could catch the plague from being close to dead bodies of victims. , Gloster shut its self off from the outside world hiring about the Black Death had reached bristol. suggests it was by human contact.
