Indigenous Values and Ethics
To promote a safe and inclusive community, we must recognize and understand the importance of Indigenous values and ways of knowing (Pepper & White, 1996)
Teaching Indigenous values would also enable Indigenous youths to learn and reconnect with their cultures, languages, histories, and traditions (Pepper & White, 1996)
Indigenous culture values collectivism and the idea of All me Relations and Interconnection (Pepper & White, 1996)
Connections With the Past
Values the importance of tradition
Elders are valued for their wisdom, age, and experience. They play an important role in community functions
Good Listening Skills
Placidity, patience and the ability to remain quite
Children are raised to respect periods of silence during community rites of transformation
One must learn to have good listening skills and powers of observation
Good Relationships
Individuals should avoid personal criticism and harsh discipline as they negatively affect one's self-image
Understand the power of words
Be mindful to choice of words, tones, and feelings during a conversation
Egalitarianism
Equality and mutual respect
Collective good is valued over personal gain
Respect privacy and noninterference
The Importance of the Family
Extended-family members are often involved in childrearing
Children participate in adult activities
Values cooperation within family and community
Sharing
Sharing between families is valued, especially if someone is experiencing a crisis
Interconnection
Recognize that land provides a sense of identity, ways of being, and religion
Recognize that we are all caretakers of the land, animals, and resources
Spirituality
Songs represents connection to the natural and supernatural worlds
Application of values help to facilitate good personal and community health
Ritual specialists/prayers/songs can be used to restore balance and healing
The passing along of songs and prayers represent a gift from the people
The recipient of new teachings has a responsibility to remain balanced
Time is Viewed as Flowing
Using knowledge learned from past lessons as guide of decision-making
Knowing where we come from can help us learn, grow, and mature
Enjoyment of Life to be Enjoyed
Humor is used to show acceptance of each other and can help individuals to cope during times of stress
Respect for Persons (Panel on Research Ethics, 2022)
It is important to obtain free, informed, and ongoing consent
Extend to the interconnection between humans and the natural world and include obligations to maintain and pass on knowledge received from ancestors as well as innovations devised in the present
Work with local Indigenous leaders and Elders to seek permission and informed consent
When working with an Indigenous community, it is our responsibility to become informed about, and tho respect, the relevant customs and traditions that apply in the particular communities
Concern for Welfare (Panel on Research Ethics, 2022)
It is important to understand how physical, social, economic, and cultural environments can impact individual welfare
Recognize and understand how Indigenous communities promote collective rights, interests, and responsibilities to maintain individual welfare
Collective welfare contributes to individual health and well-being
Any research on the Indigenous population should enhance Indigenous communities ability to maintain their cultures, languages, and identities and to support their participation in, and contribution to, Canadian society

Be mindful of potential power dynamics and take every possible action to minimize the power dynamic
Recognize and understand that past research activities have led to harm and abuse of Indigenous communities. Collaborate with Indigenous leaders to understand how to promote safety, inclusivity, and justice of research
Engagement between the community involved and researchers can enhance ethical practice and the quality of reseach
It is important to establish a relationship that promote mutual trust and communication
