  - - - In 1918 Germany reached the Marne River and was planning on going after Paris which was close by. The Germans thought it would be an easy win even with there tired and weaken army.
      - The Allies launched a counterattack against the Germans. With large numbers of troops and weapons they had the advantage.
      - The Central Powers could not keep up causing the Bulgarians and the Ottoman Turks to surrender. Austria-Hungary had to face it's own revolution. Germany was also facing unrest in it's own country. With troops pulling out the Central Powers crumbled.

      - in 1918 Kaiser Wilhelm II stepped down in Germany, and Germany was declared a republic. Germany and France signed an Armistice and WWI were officially over!

        Total war --> a conflict in which the participating countries devote all their resources to the war effort.
        
        Why did the wartime governments take control of their countries' economies ?
        
        Because of becoming a total war they devoted everything their country had. If governments were in charge of the economy they could tell factories what to produce and how much. This allowed them to produce a lot of military supplies.
        
        Factories were converted to munitions factories.
        
        Unemployment basically disappeared because everyone was put to work.
        
        Governments suppress anti war activity.
        
        Governments censored news about the war.
        
        Leaders feared that honest reports of the war would turn people against it.
        Governments also used propaganda to keep up morale and the support for war.
        
        Total war also caused the governments to turn to women for help.
        
        thousands of women replaced me in factories, offices, and shops.
        
        Women built tanks, munitions, plowed fields, paved streets and ran hospitals. They also supply troops with food, clothing, and weapons.

        Due to the government devotting their economy to war, thor goods were in short supply. They had to turn to rationing to survive.
