Neuroscience, Neuron
Cell capable of communicating with other cells via…
Neuroscience
The Brain
Most complex part of most vertebrate's nervous systems., houses many neurons + systems to control the body
-
Cerebrum
Largest part of the brain, holds cerebral cortex.
-
Apoptosis
Cell death that occurs naturally as organisms develop. Certain diseases disrupt this process, and lead to the death of neurons needed for homeostasis.
-
-
-
Nervous System System in body responsible for transmitting signals from different parts of the body.
-
-
-
-
Autonomic Nerves
Component of the nervous system that regulates involuntary physiologic processes (breathing, heart rate, etc.)
Nerve Trunk
Carries multiple nerves (Motor, sensory and autonomic)
Tools + Models
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging).
Technology that uses incredibly powerful magnets to map the brain.
-
Atkinson-Shiffron Model
Model compartmentalizing the brain into 3 main parts (short term memory, long term memory, and sensory information)
Brain Imaging
Method of capturing images of the brain to discover new parts of it, study and identify diseases, and discovering brain functions.
Biomarkers
Indicator of an organism's condition. An example would be clumps of proteins indicating a disease.
Deep Brain Stimulation
Method of treating degenerative diseases. Involves controlled electronic shocks to the brain
Biomarkers
Indicator of an organism's condition. An example would be clumps of proteins indicating a disease
-
Electromyography
Method in which doctors find the nerves affected by neuropathy and identify the type of neuropathy affecting them.
-
-
-
Neurodegenerative Diseases/Disorders.
Diseases commonly associated with the destruction of nerve cells (hence the word "neurodegenerative")
-
-
-
-
Protein Folding and Misfolding
Protein folds to become usable. Some neurodegenerative diseases are caused by misfolds.
-
Prion
Responsible for multiple neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimers, for example). Spreads throughout the body and is also transmissible.
Neuron
Cell capable of communicating with other cells via electricity. Different kinds of neurons serve different functions. Ex: sensory neurons respond to stimuli while motor neurons receive commands from the brain and move muscles.
-
-
Axon
Tail-like filament that connects neurons to one another. Makes connections between neurons and carries electric signals.
-
-
-
Peripheral Neuropathy (aka Neuropathy)
Something that does damage to the method of transporting commands from the nervous system to various parts of the body.
