Moon and Humans
Introduction
2=
-moonlight also modulates nocturnal activity in organisms ranging from inverte-brate larvae to primates
1=to determine how moon cycles are affecting human physiology and behavior.
Moon cycle= 29.5 days
Examples of behavior from past times record: madness due to moon effect, Philosophers like Plutarch, Hippocrates, Aristotle, and Pliny.
The ancient writer, Paracelsus (1493-1541)
,has mentioned, "
“The influence of the moon
is cold, and insane people have been called lunatics;
they suffer because the moon damages the action of
the brain, and they are estimulated by sexual passion,
dreams and hallucinations”
Muslim's sacred book, Koran, suggest the danger of the moon phases: focusing on new moon to elicit Epilepsy (y (Douglas
and Kelly, 1942).
In Bible(1984), mentioned the risk of moon-mind relation in madness.
Even the English Literature, Othelo by Shakespeare (1911), supports the moon danger to humans: presented the character, Desemona's death as the moon mistake.
Law(1986) find the positive correlation between menstruation and Full Moon cycle.
Blackman and Catalina (1973) found a positive correlation of the full moon with the admissons to the emergency rooms in the hospitals.
These all are methodology and results mixed.
Templer and Veleber (1980) performed a metaanalysis obtained from different studies concerning
abnormal behavior and the moon cycle, using two different statistical analyses.
With the first one, they found
that the behaviour considered abnormal was more
evident during the full moon and third quarted periods,
while in the second analysis the abnormal behavior was
more frequent during the new and the full moon.
most researchers view this notion purely
as folk psychology, and thus do not perform adequate
data collection and statistical analyses.
relation
of the effects of the moon cycle on human behavior are
controversial
