Clinical Features
Positive Symptoms: add on to normal behavior and consist of hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, and suspiciousness
Negative symptoms.
- emotional and social withdrawal and lack of interest.
Etiology: Too much dopamine is produced in a specific area of the brain. Excess dopamine overexcites the receptors
Psychosis: is a mental disorder characterized by gross impairment of thought and behavior, in which a person cannot differentiate between real and unreal thoughts
FDA Black Box Warning: Giving antipsychotics to patients with dementia may increase death rate.
-Clozapine can cause seizures
Act by attaching to the dopamine (D2) receptors and preventing the extra dopamine from connecting to the receptors and causing overstimulation.
