Human rights laws
UDHR:
set of statements made to cover all countries and - is used by many (the large set of HRs)
- a way of intervening
- not legally binding
- there are many objections to in due to cultural differences (very westen rules)
ECHR:
- made based on UDHR
- in a smaller area (europe) so provides more agreement in places with similar cultures and belief
- court set up to ensure compliance
- to be in the EU you have to be part of it
- not widespread as is only in europe making its power somewhat limited and not legally binding
Geneva convention:
- series of treaties made for wars
- has protection against torture
- applies nationallty and internationally
- breaches are crimes
- however it is difficult to collect evidence in wars so lots get away with it
Human rights variations
political barriers in countries:
- Democracy- eg in China
no religious freedom, no political freedom, no freedom of speech
- Political corruption

ppl in the power steal money so less for population
eg: north korea is a totalitarian state
(eg UK- in prison you cant vote)
social barriers Within countries:
- gender inequality- 60% girls are offered less opportunites than males, 42% women work. less girls can go to school in many cultures
