-
background
1960- study alerted us to the importance of physical activity on health -> focus on comparing indivduals in sedentary jobs with those in more active roles "incidiental" physical activity and "active transportation"
-
until recently, active transportation was largely ignored in health promotion interventions
increase in scientific lit and focus on AT in public health 1. british medical association: healthy transport= healthy lives 2. step it up!
social ecological model is great fit, spans the diff levels. understand transportation and mobility related behaviours
Transport
transport and mobility is a great example of health promotion in practice due to multi sector involvement 1. health- creates opportunity to promote physically active on a regular basis. 2. social - increase social interactions and awareness of and engagement with community services. 3. environmental- reduce greenhouse and promote lower carbon emissions
- economical and infrastrucutre- save gas money and parking at individual level, investment in infrastructure at societal level
HEALTH
health benefits - active transport 30 min low intensity activity 5 days a week increases life expectancy by 1.3-1.5 years
- cycling improves cardio fitness more than walking and most cycling to work is sufficient in duration and intensity to improve fitness
individuals who use transit walk more on average than who drive
- people who commute by active modes have significant better indicators of fitness, particularly CVD health
- data from nationa survey shows that countries with the highest level of active transport tend to have lower rates of obesity
cycling on life expectancy - helmet law, 3 main risks: crashes and collisions, air pollution, personal safety and security
