Jem doesn't find Boo as bad of a person anymore.

Tom is shot in jail while while awaiting his final sentence
Guards shot Tom a total of 17 times while he was trying to run, however there was no need for violent force there was a fence stopping him. Tom easily could have been handcuff rather than shot dead.
Atticus upset about al of the work of the trial gone, Tom had a real chanceto win the trial
This act of violence proved how racist people in Maycomb were to black people.
Guards had no reason to kill Tom, they were just being racist
Mr. Cunningham and other people form a mob to storm the jail
They wanted to kill him even though he isn't guilty
Atticus tries to calm the mob down without any violence or fighting
Scout reminds Mr Cunningham of his children
Mr. Cunningham tells the mob to leave because of what Scout said
