What is the effect of music on memory?
What is memory?
In psychology, memory is the process of acquiring, storing, retaining, and later retrieving information.
The three types of memory
Sensory memory
Short term memory (STM)
Long term memory (LTM)
The hippocampus part of the brain being responsible for memory
The different types of music
Rock
Pop
Classical
Soul Music
Reggae
Country
Hip Hop
To be able to choose a type of music that can stay at the controlled variable (music)
The different genres of music affecting memory
The Classical genre is the most effective in information retention, while the Country genre is the least effective in information retention (memory) instead of rhythm and blues as hypothesised. 2. There is no statistically significant difference between ages in terms of information retention
Sample
Brains develop rapidly between ages 12 and 22 the music we love during that period gets permanently embedded in our lobes.
Experimental design
could be to have 10 students listen to music while being told to remember certain words compared to another 10 students who read them without music
Extraneous Variables
If the music is mistakenly left as an uncontrolled variable that could possibly effect the result as the students could be listening to different genres therefore causing a different outcome. Outcome possibly being different between each students as different genres have a different effect on the brain
Independent variable
music
Dependent variable
memory
An
observational design
could be dividing the genders into females and males and comparing the different outcomes it might have.
Qualitative Design
"Question to a sample of people "How well do you work with music?" then collecting the data.
What is the definition of effect?
The effect is the outcome or result of an action such as the outcome of a sample of people being tested for what might work better studying with or without music.
What is music?
Music is a way for an individual to express emotion. It is also a way of composing melodic, rhythmic, and usually harmonic combinations of tones to create a pleasing or expressive effect
Mood/emotion
The impact that music can do to an individuals mood. Research has shown that listening to music can reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and pain as well as improve sleep quality, mood, mental alertness, and memory.
Ethics
Informed consent
Each participant will be required to hand in a consent form containing details about the experiment. Participants under 16 years will need parental consent.
Voluntary Participation/Right to Withdraw
The consent form will state that it is optional for people to participate and withdraw with no additional consequences
Confidentiality
It was maintained by using 4 digit codes as their ID. It is highly important to make sure that there is no way for the results to be shared.
Debriefing
During the experiment there will be no harm as nothing involved is psychical.
Accurate Recording
All participants are relied on their ability to be honest and correctly record the results.
Negative Effects of Listening to Music while studying
As a result of the changing words and notes in your chosen song, music may impair your cognitive abilities when you're trying to memorise things in order.
Loud or agitated music can have adverse effects on reading comprehension and on mood, making focus more difficult.
The research is fairly clear that when there's music in the background, and especially music with vocals, our working memory gets worse
Positive effects of Listening to Music while studying
According to several websites found that let your thoughts follow the organised musical patterns and rhythms for you to focus better. Studies show that our brains operate by rhythms. By listening to the rhythms found in memory-boosting songs, you’ll be able to study in a clear and calculated manner.

Several studies
have shown that verbal memory and focused attention can significantly improve by listening to favourite music every day, especially when compared to those who don’t regularly listen to music
- Several studies
have been done on music and memory. The results show that music can help us create more robust memories
music can put us in a better mood therefore enhancing the retrieval of memory, studies have been shown (
