Program implementations that can support mother returning from prison
Implementations within prison
More specified parenting programming
Out of 43 prisons, 36had parenting classes (pg 3) (parenting from prison)
Parenting classes are a wideset tool that is offered in most prisons. The mothers in these facilities are receiving the benefits of learning the skills of parenting, allowing them to become better parents once they leave prison.
Majority of the parenting classes focuses on building mother -child relationships (the effectiveness)
Most often mothers are the primary caregivers however a mother being separated from a child for some time puts strain on a relationship. Therefore, classes provide the resources to effectively rebuild the relationship it minimizes the stress.
Majority of the classes offered are not specific and do not include the child into the program.
While it is becoming uniform to offer these classes the depth and efficiency of the classes are different in every prison (pg 3)
(Exploring)
While the classes are beneficial to the parent, the more depth and specific the classes are the more they help the parent. Parents learn through experience, and in prison, they are not subjected to the experience, so the mothers need the specific training.
Most classes are found to use material that is designed without imprisoned parents in mind (what programs)
The mothers in prison are not getting curriculum that is specific to their needs and situations.
More educational programs
Education and employment are associated with moderate levels of recidivism (A bettre path)
The higher education a person has, the more likely they are not to reenter prison. Therefore by providing education within prisons, prisons are helping to reduce the rate of reentry.
Lower education statues contributes to higher levels of antisocial behaviors. (A better path)
Anti-social behaviors are associated with high levels of recidivism rates. Therefore, people imprisoned would be provided with an education as well as impacting their chances of a successful reentry into society.
IA large portion of the prison population is not educated which can give them fewer opportunities once they are released. As well as decreasing their recidivism rates (A better path)
Employment also contributes to rates of recidivism rates. So, by providing education in prison, it decreases the chances of unemployment.
30%of incarcerated people have not earned high school credentials (A better path)
A large portion of the prison population is not educated which can give them fewer opportunities once they are released. As well as decreasing their recidivism rates
More restorative justice tactics
⅔ of women’s arrest is a result of substance abuse (pg 3)
(Identifying programs)
Substance abuse is widespread in prisons. So, this is a problem that needs to be solved to make for better results for the mothers returning from prison.
When programs dealt with substance abuse women learned their triggers and the affects on their families (pg 9) (exploring)
Substance abuse is something that can heavily lead to higher rates of recidivism so by giving this support while in prison, it decrease the chances of something happening while out of prison. Also, it gives mothers the skills to rebuild relationships with their children because they now know the impact of their behaviors.
Implementations outside of prison
More acess to housing for mother leaving prisons
Most of the time women enter prison with a history in substance abuse, victimization, and mental illness (pg 3) (exploring)
Before most women even enter prison they have a history of being subjected to abuse. They are living in unsafe or unstable conditions therefore when they return there is no definate telling what they will return to.
Establishing safe and stable housing can break old habits (pg 4) (After incarceration
By getting access to safe homes the women will have an easier time stating out of prison and will be a good environment for the child to be in.
Employment
When people have a stable income and a full time job they are less likely to commit crime (A better path)
Formerly incarcerated mothers are more likely to have lower rates of recidivism.
providing the formerly incarcerated with an income is a chance to re-establish their identity (pg 9) (Successful reentry)
Leaving prison, the mothers will find who they are gain and will be able to gain confidence and become independent
.
mental health support
90% of mothers experience depression during their imprisonment (p 5) (the price they pay)
Most women in prison suffer from mental illness
In prions healthcare varies and is often times limited (after incarceration pg11)
