Achievement motivation theory
NACH (need to achieve) vs NAF (need to avoid failure)
Think of penalty shoot out in football
NACH - want to take penalty - recognise might miss, but they might also score for the team
NACH want feedback, not afraid of failure, willing to take risks, accept challenges
NAF - sit back and be passive so they don't have to face failure
NAF are afraid of failure (e.g face a weak opponent so higher chance of winning or face a much better opponent so it is justified if they lose), avoid risks, avoid challenges, dislike feedback
Defined as "the drive/desire to be successful"
Strategies to develop approach behaviours leading to improvements in performance.
Give success
Gradually increase task difficulty
Goal setting - SMART
Positive feedback
Reduce punishment
Encourage risk taking
Achievement goal theory
Outcome orientated goals
Focusses on end result such as winning the race
Task orientated goals
Focusses on technique and execution of a skill
Often used with novices when extrinsic success is less likely. Task orientated goals keep the novice motivated
