        Armitage is ironic here using a military term to speak about his efforts in trying to dislodge the memory of his actions
        
        This indicates the speaker's desperation to rid himself of the harrowing memories of his time in combat.

        the choice of the word 'eyeballs' instead of eyes suggests that the act of crying after seeing the photo is almost mechanical, a reflex.
        
        it suggests that the person seeing the photo is not truly affects by the photos; they don't have a genuine, non-superficial emotional response.
        
        'eyeballs' is also ugly, which reflect the ugliness of the reader's disingenuous response
        
        While the reader was seemingly moved to tears, they seem disingenuous to the photographer as he later states 'they do not care'
        
        the use of alliteration emphasises the readers' frivolous nature. The upbeat rhyme between 'beers' and 'tears' suggests this.

        'running children in a nightmare heat'
        
        the use of the noun 'nightmare' illustrates a dangerous and frightening experience
        
        'probably armed, possibly not'
        
        this suggests that there's a slight chance he could have been innocent and not a threat. 'Probably' comes first because this is what he wants to believe as it provides justification.
        
        The clear use of anaphora of this phrase later in the poem, shows how he is focused on the possibility of the killed being unjustified and how he feels guilty about it and regrets killing the looter
        
        the Gunman repeats this phrase to show how he cannot let it go and will not be able to rest until he knows the truth.

        'half-formed ghost'
        
        the man is a 'half-formed ghost as his image has not yet fully appeared on the photo paper. The phrase also alludes to the fact that he has likely died
        
        'his blood life in my bloody hands'
        
        by using the adjective 'bloody', Armitage is making a pun as this would could be describing the violent, gruesome nature of his death or could just be being used as slang.
        
        The later use of the word suggests that this event has ruined his life by having cursed him, suggesting he strongly regrets killing him
