Education overview timeline:
- Pre-1800s the state spent no public money on education
- Industrial revolution takes place (late 18th early 19th c.)
- UK needed an educated work force
- 1880 - Compulsory schooling introduced but this was heavily dependent on your class (ascribed status) - m/c pupils prepared for professional work whereas w/c pupils prepared for manual work (basic literacy and numeracy skills taught) - maintains status quo
Marketisation = the introduction of parental (consumer) choice, competition, and reduced state control over education; this introduced:
- National Curriculum and SATS tests
- National League Tables
- OFSTED
- Open Enrolment and parental choice
While Thatcher's 1988 Education Reform Act make the education market more competitive, giving MC parents and students the advantage (better schooling), the WC were being encouraged into vocationalism to fit the needs of the economy - INTENTIONAL CLASS DIVIDES - SERVES CAPITALISM - CONSERVATIVE VALUE!!!
