Theories of Religion
Functionalism
Durkheim
The Totem
- The totem is a symbol that represents the collective identity of a group of people.
. As religion is the foundation of society, when people worship the totem, they worship society.
¬ E.g. The totem represents religious doctrine which are then turned into laws for society.
- The totem is a representation of the collective conscience
. Shared beliefs, values and norms that hold a group of people together.
- The totem is the source of authority and moral order in society and that serves as means of social control.
. Religion provides us with a set of values we judge our behaviour against.
¬ It also stops social change and leads people to accept the social order.
The Sacred and Profane
- Sacred - things that are considered special and holy
. E.g. religious symbols or rituals
¬ Helps us to understand what is right and wrong - value consensus.
¬ Helps us to understand our place in the world - social order
- Profane - normal everyday things
. E.g. school or work
¬ Helps us understand norms and values
- Separating them helps us understand the world
-
Civil Religion
Bellah
- Responds to these evaluations
. Religion has not died out and has become a civil religion
. Many societies are now multi-faith but not every country is multi-faith
. Bellah claims people are now united in the worship of their society.
¬ Praising flags
¬ Singing national anthems
¬ Praising leaders
¬ Celebrating food and culture
Evaluations (Bellah)
- Civil religion is in decline
. People now rank personal gratification is more important than obligation to others
- Cynicism about established social institutions
. The American Dream does not have the same uniting power that it once did.
¬ Trump - The American Dream is dead
-
Evaluations
Poor research methodology
- Lots of the research is not empirical
. i.e. based on secondary sources - Durkheim did not go to Australia himself
Fails to see that Religion is a negative/ dysfunctional force
- Religion can cause conflict and division between people is not considered.
- The fact that it does not promote social change is actually a problem as society needs to change.
Out of date - secularisation
- Some argue that religion is less important and influential in society today and so it has lost most of its functions.
Ignores the role of powers and who controls religion? (the conflict approach)
- Collective conscience = ideology/ patriarchy
. Society needs to change
Feminism
-
Feminism
- Feminism is a conflict approach
. Society is dominated by the patriarchy
- Founded during the Enlightenment which upheld the principles of liberty and equality based on reason.
- Religion legitimises patriarchal society
. Affirms male dominance over women
¬ Through religious scripture and figures
¬ Through religious ceremonies and practices
¬ Through religious structures
-
Anti-religion
1. Feminist Theology
Holm and Bowker
- Not all religions are patriarchal
. Some promote values based on gender and equality and some challenge the social order.
- Elizabeth Cady Stanton - Women's Bible (1895)
- Quaker movement actively promoted ministry of women and right to choose
- Female Rabbi's accepted in some areas of Judaism
- Female Islamic scholars

Marxism
1. Religion as Ideology
Marx
- A false consciousness distracting us from how society really is
. Religion masks people from their true conditions of bourgeoise exploitation.
- Religion, therefore, functions as an Ideological State Apparatus.
. Socialises you into believing there is no alternative to capitalism.
Lenin
- Religion is a 'spiritual gin' given to the masses to confuse them and keep bourgeoise in place.
. Many religions teach us that suffering is 'part of God's plan
. God is all powerful and His will is not up for question - just like the authority of the ruling elite
- Religion legitimised inequality and hierarchy
. Suffering is part of God's plan
. There is natural hierarchy with God placed at the top.
Examples
- Caste System in India
- 16th century Christianity legitimised the position of the monarch
. Divide Right of Kings
¬ The monarch is God's representation in earth
¬ To break the monarch's law is to break God's law
-
Overview of Marxism
- Structuralist perspective - look at the role religion plays in overall society.
. Religion is only a feature of class divided society
¬ 'Religion is the sigh of the oppressed culture, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people' (Marx)
- Marxists believe religion has 2 functions:
Evaluations
Althusser
- Alienation is unscientific
- There is no such thing as human nature or a 'true self'
Abercrombie, Hill & Turner (2015)
- Whilst Christianity was a major element of pre-industrial society it had little impact on the peasantry
Neo-Marxists - Maduro
- Marx ignores the positive functions of religion
. Religious action and belief can assists social change
¬ E.g. civil rights movement
