Insulin is not produced by pancreas
Symptoms include polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, weight loss, fatigue
Oral glucose could be administered if pt is hypoglycemic
Glucometer readings can determine blood glucose level
Diabetes Mellitus Type II
Resistance to the effects of insulin
Risk factors include obesity, unhealthy diet, lack of exercise
Usually diagnosed at annual exams
HHNS is the extreme hyperglycemic state
Oral glucose could be administered if pt is hypoglycemic
Sickle Cell Disease
affects red blood cells
causes mishape of red blood cells and effects ability to carry oxygen
protects against malaria
Risk for unintentional clots due to mishape
Anemia
Abnormally low red blood cell count
Risk of tissues becoming hypoxic
Blood is unable to deliver adequate amounts of oxygen
hypoxemic hypoxia
Hemophilia
Rare condition that usually affects males
Decreased ability to create clots
Can have serious reaction to mild trauma
Thrombophilia
Blood clotting more easily
They could spontaneously develop
